Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin is quite happy to be teammates with Tom Brady this season, but that doesn’t mean the six-time Super Bowl champion won’t have to ask Godwin for his No. 12.
Godwin, who said he will defer to Brady if he asks for his No. 12, said he is excited to play with and learn from a player he calls “the greatest quarterback of all time.”
“Obviously, if he doesn’t want it, or if he’s not making a big deal out of it, I’m definitely going to keep it. We’ll see how that goes,” Godwin said of Brady, who has worn the number throughout his 20-year Patriots career. “I think just out of respect for what he’s done, what he’s accomplished, just [the] kind of the career he’s built for himself, you have to lean into that respect.”
Godwin said he has been inundated with questions about whether he will switch his uniform number with the new starting quarterback.
“My phone has been blowing up over the last 24 hours, on Twitter, on Instagram, phone calls, text messages asking me the same question,” Godwin said in a video interview on the team’s website. “I think it will be very interesting, no matter what happens. We haven’t talked about that. We talked briefly but hadn’t mentioned that all.”
Godwin, drafted out of the third round from Penn State in 2017, caught 86 passes last year and put up 1,333 receiving yards en route to his first Pro Bowl start.
