Rutgers has added yet another commitment to its class of 2021 as defensive end Cam’Ron Stewart of Governor Mifflin High School (Reading, Pa,) has pledged to spend his future as a Scarlet Knight. The commitment makes four for Rutgers in the past three days. Stewart spoke with Scarlet Nation about why he chose Rutgers.
“It felt like home, I was waiting for a long time,” Stewart said. “Coach [Greg] Schiano made it feel like home and [I like] the competitive nature there.”
The recent break in recruiting also had nothing to do with Stewart’s decision.
“No, nothing speeded it up,” he confirmed.
Schiano actually played a big part in Stewart committing to the Scarlet Knights.
“When I first met him, I thought he was pretty cool,” Stewart said. “Then, he started breaking stuff down about the academics and how the school is. And I thought, ‘yeah, this is the place where I want to be.'”
And what was Schiano’s reaction to Stewart’s commitment?
“He was super excited,” Stewart said. “He started talking about it and everybody there started texting me and blowing up my phone.”
The commitment came shortly after Stewart was on campus during a Saturday earlier in the month.
“Loved the visit, connection with the coaches, the whole vibe is just different there. Coach Schiano is a great guy,” Stewart said. “I’m looking forward to getting back there as soon as the NCAA shutdown is lifted and things are back moving again.”
Stewart has also been in contact with the coaches since Rutgers shutdown and visits were suspended by the NCAA.
“I’ve been talking with the coaches. Their message is keep working, keep chopping,” Stewart said.
There was plans for Stewart to visit some other schools in the spring, although he opted to cut those visits and commit to Rutgers.
“That was tough, but I had to make a decision,” Stewart said. Rutgers just felt like home.”
Prior to Stewart’s commitment, Rutgers’ class of 2021 was already ranked No.20 in the nation, according to 247Sports.
“I think we can have a great team at Rutgers,” Stewart said.
Stewart is the second addition of the day as his pledge followed up an earlier commitment from Jordan Thompson of Parsipanny Hills, N.J. Stewart now becomes the seventh prospect in the Rutgers class of 2021 and the first from the state of Pennsylvania. He is also the second out-of-state prospect to join five New Jersey Rutgers football commits.
