Wilson’s impressive rap skills in a funny Instagram post have since evolved into a collaboration to benefit a COVID-19 relief fund.
What started out as a humorous Instagram post of actor Rita Wilson rapping has since evolved into a musical collaboration to benefit a COVID-19 relief fund.
Wilson and hip-hop group Naughty by Nature recently released a collaborative remix of the trio’s early 90’s hit “Hip Hop Hooray,” the proceeds of which will benefit the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund.
Late in March, after she and husband Tom Hanks announced that they had tested positive for coronavirus, Wilson posted a video on Instagram of her impressively rapping “Hip Hop Hooray’s” verses while recovering. Wilson had apparently learned the rap for her role in the 2019 film “Boy Genius.”
The post went viral with thousands of viewers complimenting Wilson’s surprisingly good skills — even Naughty By Nature’s Vin Rock was reportedly impressed.
Following the encouraging feedback from the Instagram post, Wilson reached out to Rock and they, along with the rest of Naughty By Nature, recorded the official remix.
MusiCares, which is the charitable arm of The Recording Academy, offers help to the music community affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
“MusiCares’ services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality,” they explained on GRAMMY.com. “MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly influence the health and welfare of the music community.”
